Arun Gupta of Mauj on Gaming - Part 1

Entrepreneur/Executive

View Photo

Arun Gupta heads Mauj a Mumbai-based gaming company. In early 2006 Mauj became one of the few Indian start-ups to land a $10 million in VC funding. The funding round was led by Westbridge (which has since become part of Sequoia Capita), Sequoia Capital and Intel Capital.

In Part-I of our conversation Arun talks about Mauj, the gaming community in India, and Mauj's business model.

Mauj is a start-up that began its operations less than three years ago. The company follows a hybrid business model: they develop, publish and market games. Arun points out that Mauj is essentially a telco company that provides value-added services like games, entertainment and music for mobile devices.

Gaming, which is a relatively new concept in India is fast picking up, especially gaming on cell phones. The gaming market is fragmented and it is difficult to get any kind of reliable data at the moment. Arun points out that they have had to rely on qualitative research to figure out the gaming trends in India. An interesting trend is that the price of games in India is on par with the price of games in the US. But, the price of ringtone is one-tenth in India when compared to the US. Arun points out the existing price inelasticity will probably disappear when gaming become a mass-market phenomenon.

The typical gamer belongs to the 23-30 age group category says Arun. And it is this cohort that consists of core gamers he says. Mauj is not limiting its offering to this cohort alone, but is instead focused on the 16-40 age group.

How many games are downloaded every month in India? Arun says that about 6 lakhs (600,00) to 8 lakhs (800,000) games are downloaded every month, and these figures should increase in the next few months.

Mauj is not focused on the Indian market alone, but are working on overseas market in the Middle East, Africa, Europe and North America.

Arun co-founded Mauj less than three years ago. Prior to that he was with Yahoo! India in their wireless division He has about seven years of experience in the mobile content business.
